The imaginary friend we think every child wants is understanding, has magical powers, and shares their interests and secrets. Far more original and fun, though, is the mischievous purple monster that fills the pages of this picture book.
The protagonist of this story loses her monster. It’s a big little drama: she just can’t imagine her days without him. Her monster is one of a kind! He’s not nice, he doesn’t smile, he doesn’t say hello. He has an impossible personality, he’s unbearable, he causes trouble—but he’s her monster.
The girl and her dad set out to find a worthy replacement. At the market, there are colorful, stinky monsters peeking out from among the fruit and cheese, smiling at her. In the park, those hanging around dirty trash bins wave to her. But none of them interest her. In the bakery and antique shop, lively monsters are jumping, doing cartwheels, and spinning around. One of them even sticks his tongue out at her to get noticed. But none of these monsters is the one she wants. None are as irresistible as her shape-shifting monster.

The sunsets, and the girl returns home with a heart full of melancholy. By now, her monster must be across town. Unless… She looks at her bed: there’s a bump under the covers…
